Hurricane Season Home Security: A Port St. Lucie Locksmith's Checklist

1. Test every exterior deadbolt

Lock and unlock each door from both sides using only the thumbturn, then only the key. If it drags, binds, or needs a shoulder-check to shut, the strike plate or the cylinder needs attention. A grade-2 or grade-1 deadbolt with 3-inch strike screws is what actually keeps a door closed in high wind.

2. Replace smart lock batteries now

Smart locks warn you about low batteries — but not loudly, and not on the day you evacuate. Swap the batteries at the start of hurricane season and keep a spare set inside the lock's battery compartment door.

3. Rekey after any recent contractor work

Roofers, shutter installers, and pre-season landscapers often have temporary key access. Rekeying the exterior locks is a 30-minute job and cheaper than replacing hardware after the fact.

4. Print a paper key list

Store a laminated card with every key location — mailbox, shed, gate, generator — in your evacuation folder. If you leave in a hurry, the person you send back for the dog does not need to guess.

5. Save a 24/7 locksmith number
