Can a Locksmith Make a Key Without the Original?
A Port St. Lucie locksmith explains exactly when a new key can be made without the original — for cars, house locks and mailboxes.
One of the most common questions our Port St. Lucie locksmith dispatchers hear is: 'Can you make me a key if I do not have the original?' The answer is almost always yes — the method just changes depending on what the key opens.
House keys — yes, by decoding or impressioning
If you have the physical lock (even without a working key), a locksmith can decode the pin stack or 'impression' a new key by feel. In most Port St. Lucie homes we can produce a working key in 15–20 minutes on site.
Car keys — yes, from the VIN
For nearly every vehicle on the road in Port St. Lucie, we can cut and program a new key from the VIN alone. The process is called 'all keys lost' and it works on Toyota, Honda, Ford, Chevy, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia and most others. Some late-model European push-to-start systems still require dealer tools — we will tell you honestly on the phone before we dispatch.
Mailbox and cabinet locks — usually yes
Most mailbox and file cabinet locks can be picked open in seconds and then a working key cut on site. For USPS cluster boxes we cannot legally service them — that is a USPS-only lock.
What we need from you
A photo ID matching the vehicle registration or property address, and the VIN (for cars) or make/model of the lock (for a house). That is it.
