Classic Chevrolet Key Programming and Diagnostic on Gatlin Blvd

Diagnosed and programmed a classic Chevrolet key on Gatlin Blvd — VATS / PassKey era troubleshooting, reliable start at hand-off.

Classic Chevrolet key programming and diagnostic on Gatlin Blvd by St Lucie Lock and Key.

Classic Chevrolet vehicles from the VATS / PassKey era — the pellet-in-the-key generation and the transponder immobilizer generations that followed — are a distinctive kind of automotive locksmith job. The security system is old, the diagnostic tools that spoke to it originally are older still, and finding a technician who understands the platform is genuinely hard.

A Gatlin Blvd owner had a running-but-cranky Chevrolet that would intermittently fail to start. Prior work had been done on the ignition cylinder itself, but the customer suspected the immobilizer side of the system. We arrived with the classic-GM tooling and a fresh replacement key with the correct pellet resistance value for the vehicle.

Diagnosis started with a resistance check on the existing key. On VATS-era vehicles the pellet has to fall inside a narrow resistance window; if it drifts, the vehicle reads the key as unauthorized and refuses to fire the injectors. The existing key was in-window but marginal. Ignition-side resistors were healthy, so the intermittent fault pointed at the key itself.

We cut a fresh blade, installed a new pellet at the correct resistance, and did successive cold-start tests to confirm the engine caught reliably. On modern transponder-era classic Chevrolets, the fix path is similar but the tooling and programming steps differ — we scope which platform generation the vehicle actually is before we start.

The customer left with a reliably-starting classic Chevrolet, a spare cut and programmed at the same time, and a clear explanation of what the failure mode had actually been. This kind of work is why classic-vehicle owners keep our number on hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions our Port St. Lucie customers ask most.

Do you work on classic Chevrolet immobilizers?
Yes. Classic-GM VATS / PassKey and early transponder platforms are a specific competency we still keep tooling for.
Why does my classic Chevrolet start sometimes and not others?
Often a drifting VATS pellet or a worn ignition cylinder. Diagnosis narrows the fault before we replace parts.
Can you make a spare for a classic GM?
Yes, provided we can identify the correct pellet or transponder generation and cut a compatible blade.
