Hurricane Season Lock Check for Port St. Lucie Homeowners

Port St. Lucie takes a beating from June through November. Frames flex, salt air corrodes brass, and wind-driven rain finds every gap in exterior door hardware. The good news: the three problems we see over and over are cheap to prevent if you look at them before the season, not after.

1. Sticky deadbolts after storms

A door frame that swelled during a wet week is a door frame that stops the deadbolt from throwing fully. If the bolt does not extend all the way, the door is unlocked in practice even when the key turns. Test every exterior deadbolt: the bolt should extend cleanly with no wobble. If it drags, we can adjust the strike plate or replace the cylinder before you actually need it.

2. Corroded lock cylinders east of I-95

The closer you are to Hutchinson Island, Jensen Beach, or the North Fork, the more aggressive the salt air is on cheap builder-grade cylinders. If your key sticks or has to be jiggled, the cylinder wafers are corroding. Rekeying may not save it — a Grade 2 or Grade 1 replacement often does.

3. Failed smart locks after power loss

Smart locks fail when their batteries die, and hurricane season is not the time to discover that. Replace the batteries at the start of the season regardless of how much life the app says is left, and make sure every smart lock still has a working mechanical override key.

4. Garage side-door hardware

The forgotten door on every hurricane checklist. A cheap knob-only lock on a garage side door defeats the rest of your home security. Add a Grade 2 deadbolt and reinforced strike here first.

5. Hurricane-panel storage locks

If you store panels in a shed or under-stair closet, the padlock or cylinder there is probably the oldest lock on your property. Check it now, not the day of the storm warning.
