Moving to Tradition? A Locksmith's Checklist for Your New Home

We work in Tradition every week — resales, new-builds off Village Parkway, and rentals near Tradition Field. The same handful of security details come up on almost every move-in, and they are easy to fix in one locksmith visit if you know what to ask for.

1. Rekey every exterior lock the day you close

You do not know who has copies of the keys the seller handed you: previous owners, cleaners, contractors, pet sitters, the person who staged the house. A whole-home rekey in a Tradition floor plan (usually 3–5 exterior cylinders) takes 30–60 minutes and puts every door on a single new key that only you hold.

2. Match the front, back, and garage entry doors to one key

A lot of Tradition homes were originally handed over with three different keys. We re-pin them to one, or key them to a smart lock's back-up key if you are installing electronics on the front door only.

3. Check the smart lock the builder installed (if any)

Newer Mattamy and Kolter homes ship with a Kwikset SmartCode or similar. Those are fine hardware, but the default user codes are often the last four of the sale price or the model number — reset them to unique 6-digit codes, delete unused codes, and enable auto-lock.

4. Do not forget the community mailbox key

USPS cluster boxes across Tradition use a small tubular mailbox lock. The seller may have handed over one or none. We can cut mailbox keys on site or replace the whole tubular cylinder if a spare has been floating around.

5. Consider adding a smart lock only on the front

You do not have to smart-lock the entire home. A Yale Assure or August retrofit on the front door with a good Grade 2 mechanical deadbolt on the back door gives you convenience where you want it and simple reliability everywhere else.

6. Ask about hurricane-season hardware

This is Florida. Exterior doors flex during storms and cheap builder-grade locks bind afterward. If your locks are already sticking, replacing them with a Grade 1 or Grade 2 deadbolt is more useful than lubrication.
