How Key Fob Programming Actually Works (In Plain English)
A non-technical explanation of key fob programming — what happens when a locksmith pairs a new fob to your car.
Your car has a bouncer
Modern vehicles carry an immobiliser — a small computer that will only allow the engine to start if it receives a specific coded signal from a key it recognises. That is why an uncut copy of your key from a hardware store starts nothing.
Programming is 'introducing' the fob
When we program a fob, we are using a professional tool to connect to your vehicle's diagnostics port and tell the immobiliser 'this new fob is authorised'. Some vehicles allow us to delete lost fobs at the same time.
Not all locksmiths can do all vehicles
The tooling and manufacturer subscriptions cost real money, so not every locksmith carries every capability. Ask before you dispatch — we will tell you honestly whether we can complete your specific year/make/model.
Why the fob itself costs money
A modern smart proximity fob is a tiny computer with a battery, antenna, unique serial number and rolling security code. The hardware alone is often the biggest single component of your total price.
